Stairfoot Foodbank is a lifeline for many in Barnsley. Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been a crucial resource for the local community ever since. Its main activities include providing emergency food parcels to individuals and families facing financial hardship. Each week, the foodbank serves a significant number of people, sometimes feeding up to 147 individuals.
The foodbank is run entirely by volunteers who manage day-to-day operations. With a lack of external funding, the foodbank relies on the dedication of volunteers, who often spend their own money on the petrol needed to collect donations.
The team also engage in various fundraising activities such as car boot sales and coffee mornings. These are essential for purchasing food items that are not donated, and they also foster community spirit and awareness about the foodbank’s mission.
In addition to providing food parcels, Stairfoot Foodbank engages in several other initiatives to support the community. During the Christmas season they create special hampers in order to bring joy and a sense of normalcy to families. The boxes include gifts for all family members, such as pyjamas, toys, and selection boxes for children.
They also collaborate with local schools to involve students in community service projects. That educate and inspire young people about the importance of helping those in need.
