Gussies Pantry

Gussies Pantry, part of Gussies Community in Chesterfield, supports local residents experiencing food insecurity while fostering connections and community engagement. Through its pantry shop, jumble shop, and community events, the project reaches households in need, providing access to affordable food, social spaces, and practical resources. Volunteers drive much of this work, ensuring that support is both consistent and personal.

Gussies began in 2016 as a social café, offering meals made from surplus food sourced through Fareshare and local supermarkets. Aimed at reducing waste while providing community meals, the café welcomed residents for low-cost meals, fostering a social and supportive environment. When the Covid-19 pandemic increased local need, Gussies shifted to distributing food parcels, supporting over 300 households each week at its height.

Following lockdown, Gussies evolved into a community pantry. The pantry allows members to select the food they need, including fresh, frozen, and cupboard items, for a small weekly contribution. Membership is managed through local referral partners such as food banks, social prescribers, and housing support services, ensuring support reaches those most in need.

Beyond food provision, Gussies Pantry contributes to community wellbeing through youth activities, seasonal events, and the jumble shop, which recycles donated items. The project also promotes environmental awareness, sourcing surplus food to reduce waste, encouraging recycling. Through these initiatives, Gussies Pantry strengthens social cohesion, reduces environmental impact, and provides a model of community-led support that meets both immediate and long-term needs.

SDL Car Parts visit Gussies

Kayleigh and Keir from SDL Car Parts visited Gussies to present them with their cheque. Here's wht they had to say about their visit:

"We had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Blakemore and Councillor Jennifer Flood who was the Mayor of Chesterfield in 2024. Both are an absolute delight and explained to us how it all works and how much it all costs. Last year Gussies cost a staggering £58,000 to run and they wouldn't be as successful as they are without their truly marvellous volunteers, who dedicate a lot of time and energy into making such a difference to people's lives. We would encourage anybody who sees a food drive at Morrisons Brampton to donate food to Gussies Kitchen. If you have an excess of food, time or even money to get in touch with Gussie's via their Facebook page and donate to help them keep up the good work."
