Fathoms Free is a volunteer-led marine conservation group dedicated to removing harmful debris from the UK’s coastal waters. Founded by a team of passionate divers, the organisation focuses on retrieving ghost fishing gear – lost or abandoned nets, lines, and traps – that continue to trap and kill marine life long after being discarded. These entanglements can cause slow and painful deaths for fish, seals, dolphins, and seabirds, while plastic waste in the ocean is often mistaken for food, leading to starvation and internal injuries.

By actively clearing these hazards, Fathoms Free helps protect vulnerable species and promotes a healthier marine ecosystem. Their work also raises awareness of the dangers of marine pollution, encouraging individuals, businesses, and policymakers to take action. Through hands-on clean-up efforts and collaborations with environmental organisations, they advocate for sustainable solutions to reduce waste and prevent further harm to ocean life.

We first met Fathoms Free in December 2023 when they were shortlisted for Grants for Good. Since then, we’ve worked with them to produce a film that showcases the team’s efforts along the coastline. The footage captures the challenging conditions they face while removing ghost gear, highlighting the critical issues they encounter and the urgent need for public support to continue their vital work.
