The Bethel Trust Port Talbot, founded in 2014, is a community-driven charity based in one of the most deprived areas of Wales. The organisation aims to alleviate poverty and support vulnerable families through a range of services.
Among its key initiatives is the Bethel Baby Bank, which provides essential resources to families with young children experiencing hardship. Located at Bethel Community Church, the Baby Bank offers free items such as formula milk, nappies, clothing, prams, and Moses baskets to families in need. It focuses on supporting marginalised communities, including Roma Romanian, Pakistani, Ukrainian, and African families, as well as those affected by domestic violence.
The Baby Bank also creates a compassionate environment where parents can connect, share experiences, and receive emotional support. A lounge area offers a space for conversation, hot refreshments, and community building. Volunteer staff, some of whom have personal experience with domestic violence, provide empathetic support and referrals to partner organisations like Thrive Women’s Aid.
Grants for Good funding would directly enhance the Baby Bank’s services by helping to establishing a private room for confidential conversations, securing safe storage for donations, and purchasing essential items such as formula and nappies.
We are delighted to be shortlisted as this will develop our growing Baby Bank, enabling us to better assist marginalised families and those struggling to feed and clothe their babies. The funding will make a huge difference to this important community project, providing practical assistance, creating community, and forging friendships
When I met with Elizabeth Hill O’Shea, her dedication and integrity were clear in every aspect of the organisation, showcasing her deep commitment to the important work of supporting vulnerable families in the community. The Baby Bank goes far beyond providing essential items; it creates a compassionate space that nurtures emotional and social well-being. Families facing hardship find not just support, but a true sense of community. Thanks to Elizabeth’s dedication, this initiative has become a life-changing resource for families facing challenging times in Port Talbot.
