Matthew Good Foundation Trustee, Jamie Lewis MBE, who is also the Chief Executive of the HEY Smile Foundation, has been recognised for outstanding voluntary service across Yorkshire, highlighting both his personal journey and his contribution to strengthening communities across the region.

With lived experience of the care system, Jamie’s path into leadership has been shaped by resilience, determination, and a deep-rooted commitment to giving back. His experiences have informed a career focused on creating opportunities for others and ensuring that support reaches those who need it most.

Over the years, Jamie has become a leading voice within the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector across Yorkshire. Through his work, he has supported the development of organisations, built strategic partnerships, and helped unlock resources to strengthen community infrastructure. His leadership at the HEY Smile Foundation has played a central role in enabling grassroots groups and fostering collaboration across the region.

Speaking about the award, Jamie described the recognition as “incredibly humbling,” stressing that it reflects the collective effort of individuals, organisations, and communities working together across Yorkshire.

The honour comes at a time of significant challenge for the voluntary sector. Across Yorkshire and the wider UK, organisations are facing increasing demand for services alongside ongoing financial pressures and limited resources. Many are being asked to deliver more complex and essential support while navigating uncertainty and constraint.

In response, Jamie has been a strong advocate for collaboration and innovation. His work has focused on bringing organisations together, encouraging new ways of working, and supporting the sector to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape. This includes promoting cross-sector partnerships, sharing knowledge, and developing more sustainable approaches to community support.

He has consistently championed the importance of trust, collective action, and long-term thinking in addressing the complex social challenges facing communities today. His leadership has helped create a more connected and resilient voluntary sector, where organisations are better equipped to work together rather than in isolation.

Reflecting on the recognition, Jamie emphasised that voluntary service is ultimately about people,  ensuring that individuals and communities are supported, empowered, and given the opportunity to thrive.

The award of an MBE not only recognises his past contributions but also reinforces his ongoing commitment to supporting the sector across Yorkshire. Jamie has reiterated his focus on collaboration, innovation, and inclusive community development as key to meeting future challenges.

As the voluntary sector continues to navigate an increasingly complex environment, this recognition underscores the vital role of leadership, lived experience, and partnership in building stronger, more connected communities across Yorkshire.
