Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Ashbourne Animal Welfare operates The Ark Rescue and Rehoming Centre, providing care and new homes for unwanted and stray cats and dogs. Since forming in 1988, the charity has supported more than 10,000 animals through rescue, rehabilitation, veterinary treatment and adoption services. Based in Derbyshire, The Ark offers purpose-built facilities designed around animal welfare, alongside behavioural support, TLC, and responsible pet ownership advice.

Ashbourne Animal Welfare began in 1988 after a group of local residents came together to form a rescue organisation for abandoned and stray animals. In its early years, animals were cared for in foster homes, private kennels and temporary cattery spaces. As demand increased, the charity recognised the need for a permanent animal rescue in Derbyshire that could provide more consistent care. With support from local businesses, volunteers and donors, The Ark Rescue and Rehoming Centre opened in 2001 on a purpose-built site created through years of fundraising and community effort.

Today, The Ark provides dedicated facilities for both cats and dogs. Cats live in a range of cattery spaces with outdoor access, climbing areas and quiet spaces, while dogs are cared for in large kennels with outdoor runs and exercise paddocks. Animals receive health checks, vaccinations, microchipping, neutering and veterinary treatment before adoption. Dogs with behavioural needs can also receive one-to-one support and training through the charity’s Ark Academy programme. Volunteers play an important role in daily care, helping to socialise animals and provide regular interaction and exercise.

Alongside rescue and rehoming, the charity promotes responsible pet ownership and works to improve long-term outcomes for animals entering its care. The organisation has grown from a small volunteer-led group into an established local charity with more than 1,000 supporters. Its work continues to depend on community fundraising, volunteering and local partnerships, helping ensure vulnerable animals receive safe care, rehabilitation and the opportunity for a permanent home.

SDL Car Parts visits The Ark

Andrea Wyatt, People Strategist at SDL Car Parts, recently visited Ashbourne Animal Welfare to present a £3,800 grant in support of the charity’s rescue and rehoming work for unwanted and stray cats and dogs.

During the visit to The Ark Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Andrea met several of the animals currently in the charity’s care, including Ty the Greyhound and cattery residents Tom and Pud. The funding will help support ongoing veterinary treatment, rehabilitation and day-to-day care for animals before they are rehomed.
