YMCA Barnsley

YMCA Barnsley has operated continuously in the borough for over 165 years. It functions independently of the national YMCA federation, with its work shaped by local need. Over time it has grown from a traditional youth association into a multi-strand youth work charity in Barnsley covering children’s and youth services, community sports, green projects, and basic welfare support. A recent programme of building improvements has modernised its facilities and strengthened its capacity for the future.

Youth work is central to what they do, with youth clubs that create safe and welcoming spaces where young people can socialise, take part in positive activities and access support from experienced youth workers. The Unity Project supports children aged 8–14 in the Central Area through after-school clubs, youth clubs and holiday provision, while the Youth Resilience Project delivers detached youth work and structured activities in the North Area. Dedicated SEND youth clubs provide creative activities, social interaction, and personal development as part of the local Short Breaks Provision. Young people can also connect with nature through environmental activities, including an allotment and two community orchards.

Young people are also actively involved in shaping provision as volunteers, peer supporters, and Young Trustees. Meaningful youth participation requires time, trust, skilled facilitation, and a genuine willingness to share power with young people. YMCA Barnsley demonstrates a strong commitment to doing this well, creating a safe, trusting environment and empowering young people to influence decisions, develop leadership skills, and contribute to their communities. This leads to improved confidence, wellbeing, and a sense of belonging.

Beyond its direct programmes, YMCA Barnsley supports the wider voluntary sector through affordable hire of its sports hall, community hall, and training room. Its sports provision – including archery, basketball, and other activities – is open to all ages. Each weekday morning it provides hot drinks, showers, and housing referrals for people sleeping rough, working closely with Barnsley Council’s homeless support team. Across all its work, the organisation offers consistent, reliable provision to some of the borough’s most disadvantaged residents.
