Families of people involved in the criminal justice system face profound challenges. In the UK, thousands of loved ones deal with sudden arrests or imprisonment, often experiencing isolation, financial strain, and emotional distress. These “invisible” families are rarely supported by existing services, leaving them vulnerable to stigma, poor outcomes, and long-term impact on wellbeing. The ripple effects touch workplaces, schools, and communities, yet most employers and policymakers remain unaware of these hidden struggles.
Support, advice and advocacy for families
Unseen Victims CIC was founded to address this overlooked need. Built from a community-led approach, the charity works directly with families navigating the justice system. Since its inception, it has grown to support over 1000 families nationwide. Through advocacy, education, and practical support, Unseen Victims has become a vital voice in the movement to recognise and assist families affected by imprisonment.
The charity delivers a range of programmes. Peer-to-peer online communities allow families to share experiences and reduce isolation. Practical support includes guidance on prison visits, navigating legal processes, and financial assistance. National awareness campaigns challenge stigma and foster understanding, while advocacy empowers families to have a say in justice reform.
Helping employers support families
Funding from the John Good Group will support the upcoming Employers’ Workshop initiative, which aims to extend support into workplaces, training managers and HR teams to respond with compassion and understanding across hundreds of UK workplaces, equipping them to support staff affected by a loved one’s imprisonment. By providing practical training and raising awareness, the project aims to reduce stigma, protect employment, and create systemic change in workplace culture, with informed, empathetic support for staff, and safer, more understanding workplaces.
Thank you so much for shortlisting us. So many of the people we work with feel invisible, judged, or left behind. Being shortlisted tells them: you matter. Your experiences are valid, and your voices deserve to be heard. Your support will help us launch our new project training employers to better support staff whose loved ones are arrested or imprisoned. Because it really can happen to anyone, at any time, for any reason, and when it does, the right response at work can change everything.
Unseen Victims CIC is a vital, community-led organisation giving a voice to families too often overlooked by the justice system. Emma and her team show extraordinary insight into the practical and emotional impact of having a family member in custody, creating peer support networks and innovative initiatives like the Employers’ Workshops. Their work transforms stigma into understanding and strengthens both families and communities. We have every confidence in their vision to create lasting change and ensure that no family suffers in silence.
