Bearded Fishermen

Bearded Fishermen Charity is a grassroots suicide prevention and mental health organisation based in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. Run entirely by volunteers, they operate crisis response teams, a weekend street outreach, and a 24/7 peer support helpline reaching people across the UK at their most vulnerable. Now they are expanding their work to protect young people from the devastating link between bullying and suicide.

Every year, thousands of people in the UK reach a point of crisis with nowhere to turn. For many, the difference between life and death can be simply having someone to talk to – someone who understands, at the end of the phone. Bearded Fishermen Charity exists to be that someone.

Founded in Gainsborough, this suicide prevention charity began as something simple: informal fishing meet-ups where people could come together, talk openly, and support one another around mental health. During lockdown, demand grew rapidly, and so did the charity. What started as a community gathering became a structured organisation with offices, trained volunteers, and a 24/7 helpline reaching people across the UK.

Mental Health Support Helpline

Today, Bearded Fishermen operate ten active phone lines, offering free peer support around the clock. Their crisis response teams work directly alongside the police, fire service, housing teams, and drug rehabilitation centres. This means people in acute crisis can access real, immediate support without needing to go to hospital. On Friday nights, volunteers take to the streets to support people in local commuities. All of this is delivered by 21 dedicated volunteers, giving their time because they know how much it matters.

Anti-bullying Campaign

With support from the Oades Family Trust through the Grants for Good programme, Bearded Fishermen are now expanding their work to address one of the most urgent drivers of youth suicide: bullying. The funding will establish a dedicated bullying helpline for under-18s, adding four new call centre lines and a specific support number for young people. New volunteers will be recruited and trained in anti-bullying techniques. In addition, the charity will work with schools and families, delivering assemblies and training wellbeing ambassadors to intervene early. Because for many young people, the right conversation at the right time can change everything.

A huge thank you for believing in what we do and helping us change and save children’s lives. Our children are our future and by supporting them now, when they need it most, we can shape the way they live and grow for years to come.

Bearded Fishermen Charity is a remarkable example of community-led impact. What began as fishing meet-ups has grown into a fully operational suicide prevention charity, driven entirely by volunteers with real lived experience and genuine passion. Richard and the team have built something truly impressive – strong partnerships, robust governance, and an innovative approach to crisis intervention and anti-bullying work. We are proud to support them through the Oades Family Trust’s generosity, and confident they will make a lasting difference to young people and families across the UK.
