Ogmore River Clean

Local resident Alun turned to environmental activism after noticing thousands of tyres in the River Ogmore in South Wales while walking his dog. In 2023, he led a massive local cleanup effort removing 2,000 tyres and much more. Despite this progress, thousands of tyres still endanger the river’s ecosystem. Alun is planning further large-scale cleanups in the river and aims to make an impact on environmental initiatives across the UK.

June 2024

Local resident, Alun turned to environmental activism after noticing thousands of tyres in the River Ogmore in South Wales while walking his dog. Motivated to make a difference, he organised a massive cleanup in 2023.

The initial cleanup saw Alun bring together over 200 volunteers and 50 organisations. They removed 2,000 tyres, 34 trolleys, and a tonne of plastic and metal scrap. This collaborative effort garnered significant media attention and showcased the power of community action in addressing environmental issues.

Before the cleanup, around 15,000 tyres had littered the River Ogmore, leaching toxic chemicals and heavy metals into the water, harming wildlife and human health.

Having successfully removed many of the tyres, the volunteers have significantly improved the river’s condition and reduced pollution.

However, thousands of tyres still remain, necessitating further cleanup efforts.

A second river cleanup was initially planned for June 2024 but was delayed due to sewage leaks and is now scheduled for summer 2024. This event aims to remove additional plastic and metal pollution from the river.

Funding from the John Good Group will be used to purchase equipment and supplies to support volunteer efforts at this and future large-scale river cleans.

While pursuing an Environmental Science degree, Alun is now collaborating with various organisations to combat river pollution in the River Ogmore and beyond. He is working to establish Ogmore River Clean as a Community Interest Company and aims to make an impact on environmental initiatives across the UK.

I am delighted that the John Good Group have chosen to support this very worthwhile environmental project. Your vote goes towards supporting nature and the creatures that do not have a voice.

From a personal note, I enjoy this small strip of Wales immensely. It offers me a safe place to relax and think. If others are able to use this space, enjoy its beauty and not have to look at 15,000 tyres in a river, it would give me an enormous sense of pride that I have contributed to my local community with your support and backing.

Orgmore River Clean

“My meeting with Alun left me thoroughly impressed. In his Environmental Science degree with the Open University, he has learned a great deal about the impact of discarded tyres and litter on our environment, affecting both river wildlife and human health.

While cleaning up the River Ogmore remains a priority, Alun’s vision extends to similar environmental challenges around the UK. Engaging tyre giants like Michelin, Bridgestone, and others, and liaising with the BTMA, Alun has been part of discussions on establishing a circular economy.

Our funding will go towards further river cleans in the River Ogmore, but I think Alun’s determination will mean the impact will go far beyond.”
