Foundation News – Jan 2012

NEWSLETTER / JAN 2012
Welcome to the first Foundation Newsletter! This is an internal newsletter which is only received by colleagues within the John Good group of companies. We hope to update you regularly with news relating to fund-raising and your causes but you can visit the dedicated section of the website at any time to find out more: http://staff.matthewgoodfoundation.org.Since our launch in October we have had a great response from you all. Many match funding applications have come in and been completed! We have some grass-roots projects in the pipeline and three fund-raising events lined up.

We’re also making good progress on the research project that aims to saves lives of people running endurance events like Matthew in the future. Please remember that the Foundation is here for you! If you have any ideas, would like to fund-raise or be match funded for another cause, please do speak with your office Foundation Rep!

Santa Run

Well done to Sophie Mills and Laura Pitchell for successfully completing the Santa Run on Sunday 11th December 2011 in aid of East Anglian Childrens Hospice. The money raised will be match funded and support families and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Herriot Hospice

Following the death of Mike Smith’s father in 2011, he and his family raised money for the Herriot Hospice. They took part in a walk around hills of Cleveland escarpment, which featured in many of his father’s paintings. The Foundation match funded £500 towards this great cause and congratulate the whole family on their efforts!

Support from Mobile Doctors

Mobile Doctors are supporting Chris Price of Price Partnership as he prepares to take part in a mammoth 32 half marathons during 2012. Yes, that’s a half marathon every week and a half. Chris was not far behind Matthew when he collapsed and has been in touch with the family ever since Matt’s death. He has committed to raise money for the Foundation which will initially focus on research and education surrounding Sport Induced Heat Stroke and its life threatening potential. Chris also aims to double the money that each business donates for his participation, potentially raising £32,000!

To follow his progress please see the fundraising section.

Shipbrokers award

In memory of Matthew, John Good & Sons Ltd decided to change the name of the annual prize which they award to the candidate in the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) examinations with the highest marks in the foundation paper on Liner Shipping. This prize will now be called The Matthew Good Memorial Award and was won this year by Mr K N Ndoro of the Kenya Ports Authority. It was presented to his representative at the annual prize giving ceremony at Trinity House, London on September 22nd by John A Good.

The ICS hold their examinations annually at different centres around the world. Matthew completed his examinations in 2008 and was elected as a fellow to the Institute in 2010.
